People all over the world are bashing WhatsApp for its new Privacy Policy Update which is a matter of concern for all of us. And thus almost everyone is giving a thought to shift on better alternative platforms like Signal App, Telegram, etc. due to privacy issues.
We are going to compare the two alternatives, Signal App and Telegram. It will make it easier for you to select the one more suitable for you if you are thinking of replacing WhatsApp with another messenger app on your mobile phone.
RELIABILITY
WhatsApp came into existence in 2009 whereas Telegram in 2013. The signal app became fully operational after various developments in 2014.
If we talk about reliability, the older the app gets, the more stability and reliability it provides.
PRIVACY
Telegram app is owned by Telegram FZ LLC, Russia whereas WhatsApp is a subsidiary of Facebook Inc. We all are concerned about privacy due to the integration of data by WhatsApp with its parent company Facebook.
The Signal app is founded by Signal Foundation which is a non-profit organization working on providing open-source privacy technology for free expression by its users and making global communication more secure.
CYBER THREAT
The country which tops the list of origin of Cyber Threat is Russia. And so if we go by the parentage, Telegram has a backside here. Whereas, WhatsApp and Signal app originated in the United States which is placed in 10th position according to a report published in 2020.
PUBLIC RESPONSE
Telegram is censored in various countries due to security issues. Certain Internet Services Providers do not allow their customers to avail of the app.
WhatsApp has received allegations of privacy breaches and mass surveillance of customer information and data.
The signal app has not got any controversies yet, maybe due to its non-profit organization. It works on donations rather than advertisements and promotions.
Both Telegram and WhatsApp have Profit motives whereas the Signal app is fully open source with no profit motives.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk who is now the richest man in the world has also suggested the use of the Signal app for communication.
END TO END ENCRYPTION
Telegram does not give an end to end encryption by default. The server can easily decrypt the communication as the encryption is from the user to the server and then from the server to the user.
Data is end to end encrypted in WhatsApp but Metadata and Backups in the servers are not encrypted.
Both Data and Metadata are end to end encrypted in Signal app.
CHAT BACKUP
Telegram has Chat back on by default except for the secret chats whereas, in the Signal app, it is off by default.
WhatsApp uses third-party clouds for creating backup which does not end to end encrypted.
SCREEN SECURITY
Whatsapp does not provide any Screen Security to the user but the Signal app provides it by default.
Telegram has this option only for secret chats.
SELF DESTRUCTION OF MESSAGES
The older messages get self-destructed after some time automatically in the Signal app whereas, in Telegram, this option is only available for secret chats.
WhatsApp has also introduced something similar to this called Disappearing Messages in its latest update.
GROUP CHAT SECURITY
Group Chat Metadata security is provided only by Signal app.
TWO STEP VERIFICATION OR AUTHENTICATION
This feature is provided by all the three apps.
AUTOMATIC SCREEN LOCKS
